These children, and their caregivers, are often angry, confused and hurt.  When an incarcerated person works the program. They have a better understanding of relationships which can potentially Increase Resilience in their Children.  Our current need is 9 male sponsors. As we approach the holidays, please keep these still suffering codependents in your thoughts.  Consider sponsoring someone who could use the hope of recovery in the coming year.  During the Holiday season many of us sit down and make out cards, and notes to loved ones, and remember the years before we found recovery, and the power to make it work in our lives.  Think how rewarding it could be to help someone; we have never met find serenity and peace. How did you feel when you got unstuck?  Sharing the message of CoDA with residents of institutions often brings new freedom to them. “I really am grateful & hopeful to what I have learned & how it’s going to affect my life, my relationships w/family, children, friends, & how important it is to be able to pass this on to generations after me.”   From an inmate in California expressing her gratitude for CoDA groups in her prison. What does H&I do?  The CoDA Hospitals & Institutions Committee never runs meetings in prisons, rehab facilities, or jails. It helps and supports CoDA members who care to do the footwork. We encourage and equip trusted servants who want to take the message of CoDA recovery to people who are stuck in places where they need to have the message brought to them.  We do this by helping get CoDA literature to those places, corresponding with those who write to us, providing information for holding meetings in institutions, helping to find sponsors for those who want to work their program. Did you know?  We cannot do this without you.  CoDA meetings can be found in some prisons, mental health facilities, hospitals, woman’s shelters, etc. after grateful members of CoDA carry the message to those still suffering, or the residents reach out to H&I for resources to start a meeting. Those inside facilities hear about CoDA from fellow residents, family members, and counselors, finding CoDA literature there, and from CoDA members who take the message of recovery from codependency there.    Opportunities for service:   There are many. <img alt="" height="143" src="https://codependents.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/show_img/H_and_I/20220816120300/dc1bff8762c1d8515a1cfdb943735f07_hi.jpg" width="150" />   H&I Lights Newsletterof the Hospitals & Institutions Committee of CoDA   Beam 8    August 2022        What could you do when a Facility requests your help in bringing CoDA to those residing in their facility?  Establish Contact people: <ol><li class="paragraph" style="margin-bottom:7px; margin-left:32px">Contact person at a facility: Social Worker, Spiritual leader, Librarian, Warden, Director, or counselor). This may be the person who contacted CoDA with the request.</li></ol><ol start="2"><li class="paragraph" style="margin-bottom:7px; margin-left:32px">Find local CoDA meeting members willing to work together in these efforts.   </li></ol><ol start="3"><li class="paragraph" style="margin-bottom:7px; margin-left:32px">At least two people initial panel or presentation of CoDA’s program, to staff only, may be helpful.  May bring CoDA pamphlets such as” What is CoDA?”, “Am I Codependent?”, Establishing Boundaries In Recovery”, and “Communication and Recovery” to the initial meeting.</li></ol>What you can do: <ol><li class="paragraph" style="margin-bottom:7px; margin-left:32px">Local meeting lists can be made available to facility residents who are about to be released. </li></ol><ol start="2"><li class="paragraph" style="margin-bottom:7px; margin-left:32px">Donate CoDA literature with local meeting information on them for book carts or the facility’s library. </li></ol><ol start="3"><li class="paragraph" style="margin-bottom:7px; margin-left:32px">Donate to Books for Inmates and Institutions (BFII) if you cannot afford to put local meeting literature with their information included. Your group may designate which books you want to be donated to which institutions. </li></ol><ol start="4"><li class="paragraph" style="margin-bottom:7px; margin-left:32px">Hold meetings in a facility with non-resident CoDA member leading the meeting:  </li></ol>Determine frequency of meetings between staff and CoDA volunteers.  Panels can be done quarterly or monthly as determined by the people involved. Conduct panels of 2-4 local volunteers who share their experience, strength and hope and general information about CoDA with residents in the facility or  speaker meetings (one or more volunteers), step meetings, and sharing meetings with or without open discussions usually followed by a time for questions (from residents) and answers.   Contact<a href="mailto: hosp@PROTECTED"> hosp@PROTECTED</a> for further information.  If you or your local meeting have experience in taking CoDA into a facility, please share your ESH with hosp@PROTECTED.  <a href="mailto:hosp@PROTECTED">hosp@PROTECTED</a>

We are working with members from other countries to guide them in developing H&I committees worldwide. We need sponsors to write to individuals in penal facilities in the United States, who cannot attend meetings outside the facility. Sharing the message of CoDA with residents of institutions often brings new freedom to them“I really am grateful & hopeful to what I have learned & how it’s going to affect my life, my relationships w/family, children, friends, & how important it is to be able to pass this on to generations after me.”From an inmate in California expressing her gratitude for CoDA groups in her prison. What does H&I do?The CoDA Hospitals & Institutions Committee NEVER runs meetings in prisons, rehab facilities, or jails. It helps and supports CoDA members who care to do the footWORK. We facilitate trusted servants who want to take the message of CoDA recovery to people who are stuck in places where they need to have the message brought to them. We do this by helping get CoDA literature inside, corresponding with those who write to us, providing institutional meeting information, helping to find sponsors for those who want to work their program. Did you know?  We cannot do this without youCoDA meetings can be found in some prisons, mental health facilities, hospitals, woman’s shelters, etc. after grateful members of CoDA carry the message to those still suffering, or the residents reach out to H&I for resources to start a meeting. Those inside facilities hear about CoDA from fellow residents, family members, and counselors, finding CoDA literature there, and from CoDA members who take the message of recovery from codependence to them. Opportunities for service: There are many, and in upcoming issues of this newsletter, some of these will be featured.
