Friday Fellowship Item #9: SOMETHING THAT WORKED

Written by a CoDA member, CoDA content approved by Communications Committee

During 2016, as now, the CoDA Literature Committee was seeking new stories to be placed in the next edition of the CoDA Blue Book. To help achieve that, three members of the committee met weekly by phone and online to develop a workshop format for people thinking of writing down their stories of CoDA recovery. It was clear, though, that a workshop plan that had never been implemented would not be enough, they had to do it.

So members of the committee conducted two of the workshops at the Convention in Phoenix that year, putting the plan into action with real, live CoDA members in attendance. About 50 came to the first session, focused on recovering from the roadblocks that might prevent people from writing. The next day, about 80 people joined to do actual writing. For both of these, the detailed script they had hammered out was followed closely to see if it was possible for anyone to do the workshop by simply using the script.

The workshops got high marks and, as announced, the participants were later sent copies of the entire script so they could repeat the experience.

During the winter, a couple of those participants decided to do just that at a regional CoDA convention in Sacramento. Their plan to drive from their homes in Reno, however, was thwarted at the last minute by a heavy snowfall that blocked the pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains. That created an empty time slot in the convention. The organizers noticed that they also had copies of the scripts for the workshops. So they went ahead and presented the workshop even though they had never attended one themselves. Once again, the workshop went well and was enjoyed and appreciated by the participants.

Sometimes it goes just like it is planned! And that script is available for download by any of you reading this. It is in several parts. There is the script for the workshop on recovery from roadblocks to writing here. There is the script for the actual writing workshop here. And there is a script for a worksheet to go with the actual writing workshop here.

You too can help produce the long awaited new edition of the CoDA Blue Book.
