What to do when I don’t like my CoDA meeting or when issues arise.

 

 

How do we handle issues that come up in CoDA meetings that we do not like or we believe to be wrong? Here are a few suggestions as collected by fellow CoDA Members:

 

1. We consult our sponsor to process the situation and keep our side of the street clean. We remind ourselves that not everything goes our own way. Is this an opportunity to learn and grow from our discomfort or do we need to speak up/take action?

 

2. We review “Dealing with Disagreements” from the Issues & Meditation Committee http://coda.org/default/assets/File/IMC/IMC%20Disagreemen%20Process.pdf This summarizes a wealth of material in our Fellowship Service Manual (Section 2, page 14) and our Meeting Handbook.

 

3. We hold a home group business meeting before or after our normally scheduled CoDA Meeting to discuss any issues. During that meeting we hold group conscience to decide meeting related issues. We keep ourselves open to our Higher Power for the outcome of these Group Conscience decisions. Our home group can do a group inventory or refer to the “dealing with disagreements” document.

 

4. If we feel the meeting is not healthy then we look to other options such as online or phone meetings to compliment our current recovery meeting schedules

 

5. We consider starting a new meeting with a format or style that meets the requirements of CoDA (Four Foundational documents) and our own needs for CoDA Recovery

 

In CoDA, we talk about healthy communication and this is an excellent opportunity to “walk the walk” and practice our recovery tools to address issues one on one. An example, if someone does not honor the focus of a meeting (i.e. fragrance free or gender specific meeting)
